Missed Period and Positive Pregnancy Test in Korea: What Should You Do Next?

October 5, 2026

Your first practical steps after a positive test

You've missed your period and the pregnancy test is positive. Whether you're thrilled, surprised or unsure, it's normal to wonder what to do next — especially in a foreign country. Here are the practical first steps in Korea.

1. Take Care of Your Health Now

  • Start folic acid if you aren't already taking it
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Check any medications or supplements with a doctor or pharmacist
  • Limit caffeine

2. Book an OB-GYN Visit

Most women have their first visit around 6–8 weeks after the first day of their last period. At this visit, an ultrasound confirms the pregnancy's location and often shows a heartbeat.

3. Know the Warning Signs

Seek urgent care — call 119 or go to an emergency room — if you have:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially on one side
  • Shoulder-tip pain
  • Dizziness or fainting

These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.

4. Check Your Insurance

If you're enrolled in NHIS, many prenatal services are covered and you may be eligible for a pregnancy medical expense voucher. If you have private insurance, check your maternity coverage.

5. Think About Your Care Plan

  • Choose a clinic for prenatal care
  • Ask where you would deliver
  • Plan for screening tests in the first trimester

6. If You're Unsure About the Pregnancy

It's okay to have mixed feelings. An OB-GYN can confirm how far along you are and discuss all your options confidentially and without judgment.

Support in English

An English-speaking OB-GYN can answer your questions clearly and help you take the next steps with confidence.
