Bleeding After Sex: Common Causes & When to Get Checked
Postcoital bleeding is usually benign — but it should be evaluated
Quick answer: Light bleeding after sex is often caused by vaginal dryness, minor tears, cervical ectropion or polyps, but infections such as chlamydia and cervical changes can also be responsible. If it happens more than once, see a gynecologist for an exam, Pap or HPV test and STI testing.
Noticing blood after sex can be alarming. In most cases, the cause is benign and easily treated — but postcoital bleeding should always be checked, because it can occasionally be a sign of cervical changes that need attention.

Common Causes
- Cervical ectropion: delicate cells on the outer cervix that bleed easily; common with hormonal contraception and pregnancy.
- Infections: chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis or other causes of cervicitis.
- Cervical or endometrial polyps
- Vaginal dryness: leading to small tears, especially around menopause or while breastfeeding.
- Friction or minor trauma
Less Common but Important Causes
- Precancerous changes of the cervix
- Cervical cancer (rare, but bleeding after sex can be an early sign)
Why You Should Get Checked
Even if bleeding is light or has happened only once, a check-up is recommended — especially if it happens again, or if you're overdue for a Pap smear.
What to Expect at Your Visit
- Questions about your cycle, contraception and sexual health
- A gentle pelvic exam to look at the cervix
- STI testing
- A Pap smear and HPV test if appropriate
- A pelvic ultrasound if needed
- Colposcopy if anything unusual is seen
Treatment
- Antibiotics for infections
- Removal of polyps
- Lubricants or local estrogen for dryness
- Treatment of an ectropion if it causes bothersome bleeding
- Follow-up of any abnormal cervical findings
Seek Urgent Care If
Bleeding is heavy, you're pregnant, or you have severe pain or fever.
Peace of Mind
Most causes are easily treated. An English-speaking OB-GYN can examine you privately and explain your results clearly.
