Pre-Pregnancy Checkup in Seoul: Tests to Consider Before Trying to Conceive

Preparing your body for a healthy pregnancy

Planning a pregnancy? A pre-pregnancy (preconception) checkup is one of the best things you can do for a healthy start. In Seoul, many OB-GYN clinics offer preconception checkups in English. Here's what to consider.

Why Have a Pre-Pregnancy Checkup?

Some health issues are best addressed before pregnancy — from vaccinations to managing chronic conditions. A checkup can reduce risks and help you conceive with confidence.

Tests to Consider

  • Blood tests: blood type, anemia, thyroid function, blood sugar
  • Infection screening: hepatitis B, syphilis, HIV and other STIs
  • Immunity checks: rubella and chickenpox
  • Pap smear and HPV test if due
  • Pelvic ultrasound: to check the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, cysts or polyps
  • AMH test: optional, to estimate ovarian reserve

Vaccinations

If you're not immune to rubella or chickenpox, vaccination is recommended before pregnancy — and you'll be advised to wait a period of time before trying to conceive. Ask about other vaccines such as hepatitis B and flu.

Folic Acid

Start a folic acid supplement — commonly 400 micrograms daily — at least one month before trying to conceive and continue through early pregnancy. Some women need a higher dose; ask your doctor.

Lifestyle Steps

  • Stop smoking and limit alcohol
  • Aim for a healthy weight
  • Reduce caffeine
  • Review medications and supplements with your doctor
  • Manage stress and sleep

For Your Partner

Partners can benefit from STI testing, a healthy lifestyle and, if needed, a semen analysis.

Chronic Conditions

If you have diabetes, thyroid disease, epilepsy or high blood pressure, plan ahead with your doctor to optimize your health and medications before conceiving.
